Our Prefab team recently had the opportunity to assist in the temporary power for the S. Flagler House project. This called for two temporary power skids, one for the West Tower and one for the East Tower. The build time was going to be tight – just 3 weeks after the switchgear arrived at FSG Prefab in San Antonio, the completed assemblies needed to be on-site in West Palm Beach, FL.
The two temporary power skids were going to be quite large. The bigger of the two measured roughly 12’ L x 5’ W x 11’-4” H – for reference, the overhead door opening at FSG Prefab is approximately 1-1/2” taller. Prefab added forklift pockets to one end and casters to the other to allow us to tilt and roll the skid without having to lift it too often. The larger skid also weighed in at around 6500 pounds. The smaller skid was approximately 4’ less in length and 3500 pounds in comparison. The two temporary power skids required custom-fabricated pull boxes for splicing the incoming parallels and wireways to distribute conductors to the proper disconnects.
The Prefab crew put in some long days and even some weekend work to ensure the deadline would be met. It was the first time to work with gear and conductors this size for most of the crew on this project. It provided a fantastic training opportunity for the young apprentices, so early in their careers, to be able to say they were an integral part of building a 4,000 Amp service. While it may be “temporary,” it still consists of all the same components as a permanent service on a project.
The build proved to be a challenge but made FSG Prefab a better team for it. The experience gained by many of the crew who were able to be a part of this will stick with them throughout their careers.
The future leaders of FSG look very promising!
