“Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Mejia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Javier. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Story of how it all started is quite simple really, about 3 years ago at a youth conference I was handed a DSLR camera for the first time, at the time being I didn’t even know how to switch the camera on. When the event was over and the pictures were posted everyone was so amazed at how “good” the shots, from there I said I would give this thing a shot. As the years passed by it started to grow on me. Photography became a way for me to escape reality, I started taking pictures from the top of skyscrapers in Dallas to show the city in a way that not everyone gets to see. I focused mainly on landscapes.
Eventually, I started to take pictures of people and events, at first it was a struggle but as time passed I started to become better at it. Since then I have had the pleasure to work with Children’s Hospital, City Square a non profit focused on helping homeless men and women. I have also had the pleasure of being nominated Top 20 Millennial by Dallas Weekly in 2017, I was nominated as one of the top 5 photographers by K104s Lady Jade. I guess you can say I became a photographer by accident, that helps me remember where I come from and who I am. Helps to stay humble and always give God Glory for all we have achieved.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a photographer in Dallas is not an easy task, Dallas is a very competitive city when it comes to arts, photography and video included. One of the biggest challenges nowhere is that everyone with a camera is now a “Photographer”, but what they don’t know is that photography is more than just point and shoot. There have been days or months that not a single penny comes in, people like to go where Cheaper is Better, that is not always the best way out.
I tried to always find a happy medium so that I can provide best prices in town and best quality in town. That is how I manage to keep my clients happy. There were times though where I have thought maybe I should just give up this and start from scratch, but I am constantly reminded that I don’t do this for the money, I do this because I love capturing the essence of a moment in a picture. Photography is not and will never be easy, Sleepless nights and countless hours of editing is what makes this worth it if you ask me.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My thing here is Photography, Portraits, Landscapes, Merchandise, Events… Etc.. you name it. I do it. I am known in Dallas for being the photographer who would risk it all for the perfect photo. And that is what I am most proud of.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a very shy person, hardly talked to anyone, always picked on haha. I was never interested in anything regarding media. I was very involved in sports and such some of them, not by choice.”
