The long wait was finally over, game day was here. FSG associates from Baltimore, Boston, NYC, New Jersey and Long Island were getting into their seats or huddled up with their teammates.
The Vietnam Veterans Chapter #82 of Hicksville NY, marched our nation’s colors out on to the field as the four teams stood on the first and third base foul lines. A recording of the National Anthem was played and then Bernie Erickson threw out the first pitch. Play Ball! The opening ceremonies had concluded, the umpires were ready and now it was time to play for the coveted Graham Cup. FSG’s First Annual North East Regional Softball Tournament was underway.
The four teams participating were Baltimore, New Jersey Black, New Jersey Red and Long Island. At the halfway point NJB was sitting comfortably with two wins, Baltimore was eliminated and NJR had to play LI. The winner would face NJB in the championship round.
Lunch and refreshments were served and all teams and attendees got a chance to relax and enjoy the camaraderie of all the FSG friends and family.
The Championship round would come down to the last game of a double header. LI needing to win both games took game one and the momentum into game two but NJB would come away with the win and the Championship.
The Graham Cup now resides in Perth Amboy, at least until they host the 2nd Annual North East Regional Softball Tournament.
It was a great day for FSG. The competitive spirit was not as important as the spirit of unity. We are all on the same team and that was evident as you saw the smiles and joking of teams and supporters with one another and the good sportsmanship on the field.
